Sarah Tyrrell

I had my first dance classes when I was four years old at pre-school. They were informal and fun and I loved them. When I was five, I joined Patricia McIntosh’s School of Dance and have never looked back. Under Miss Mac’s expert guidance, I have passed eight Cecchetti exams and qualified to dance in every Gala Performance. I have also been successful at the Durban Dance Foundation annual Bursary Presentation which forms part of The National Creative Arts Youth Festival.

Dance highlights include a Summer School experience with The Cape Junior Ballet Company in 2012, workshops hosted by Robin van Wyk and Vincent Hantam in 2013 and qualifying to take part in the Mabel Ryan Medal Award last year. Our studio’s bi-annual productions are always my favourite and I have danced in The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella and Hansel & Gretel. Another big moment for me was my successful audition for membership of the KZN Dance Academy.

I am currently preparing for my Intermediate Foundation exam, and I am also rehearsing for my annual school production of Into The Woods. There is no doubt that my eight years of ballet have served me well in securing roles in other theatrical productions, building confidence and instilling in me a love of the stage. I have also enjoyed opportunities to broaden my experience of dance with recent introductions to both Hip Hop and Theatre Dance.

Looking ahead, as the youngest member of the academy, I am excited to have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and to grow and develop as a dancer and a performer. It is an honour to be part of the energy which drives the academy.
