Talisha Pienaar

I was three years old and had just started nursery school when I saw a group of ballerinas doing a ballet class. I was mesmerized to say the least. I wanted to be that, to do that, to look like that. I also wanted to wear chiffon skirts and dance on the tips of my toes like a fairy! Very little has changed over the years, except perhaps what my feet look like!

I live in Pietermaritzburg and have been dancing with Julia Powell for the last 10 years. For the last four years my parents have been driving me down to Durban every weekend to allow me to attend classical ballet and contemporary classes with the KZN Dance Academy under Mrs Yvonne Barker. I am currently preparing for my Advanced 2 Cecchetti ballet examination. I have also just finished performing in Thumbelina in collaboration with dancers from Cape Town City Ballet which was presented by the artistic director, Robin van Wyk.

I am currently in matric and I am very excited to have been accepted into Cape Town City Ballet’s graduate program for next year (2016). My ultimate goal is to be a professional ballerina in a world renowned ballet company. My parents, ballet teacher and coaches have been absolutely amazing. Being a part of the KZN Dance Academy has definitely opened my Pietermaritzburg eyes to the rest of the world!
